When every mile is a milestone, choose high mileage oil. High mileage oil is specifically designed for cars with more than 75,000 miles. This type of oil can help reduce oil consumption, minimize leaks and oil seepage, and can also help reduce smoke and emissions in older engines.
If you've never used high mileage motor oil before, you may be wondering, "Is it worth the cost?" and "How is high mileage oil really different than regular oil?" Well, turns out there are quite a few distinct differences.
Most importantly, high mileage oils include special seal conditioners. When a car or truck is leaking oil and leaving spots in the driveway, it is most likely a result of seal degradation. Your engine's seals are made out of rubber, a material that naturally degrades over time. As it ages, rubber can become brittle, shrink, and crack. Here's where high mileage oils really show their worth! The seal conditioners within high mileage oil will actually react to the rubber seals in such a way that they replace what's been lost over time. High mileage oil can't fully restore your engine's seals to their original, like new condition, but they can make your seals more flexible and cause them to expand (which helps prevent oil leaks).
High mileage oils also contain antioxidants, detergents, and wear/friction additives. Even if your engine has less than 75,000 miles on it, the added antiwear and detergent compounds in a high mileage oil can be just as helpful to a factory fresh vehicle as one that's been around the block (or across the country) a few times.
